India’s Car Market in 2025: Big Surprises, New Winners and a Sporty Tease from Skoda

The Indian passenger vehicle (PV) market in calendar year 2025 turned out to be anything but predictable. While Maruti Suzuki continued to dominate overall volumes, the leaderboard saw a major shake-up, with several models jumping ranks, former chart-toppers slipping down, and SUVs continuing their strong march forward. Adding to the excitement, Skoda also made headlines with the runaway success of the Octavia RS, proving that performance cars still have a loyal fanbase in India.

Maruti Dzire Takes the Crown

Stealing the spotlight in CY2025 was the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, which emerged as the best-selling car of the year. The compact sedan recorded 214,488 units, marking a massive jump of around 46,500 units compared to 2024. This translated into a healthy 28 per cent growth, helping the Dzire leap from eighth place straight to number one in just a year.

A big reason behind this surge was the arrival of the new-generation Dzire, which struck a chord with buyers. Demand remained strong for both petrol and CNG versions, with CNG models accounting for an impressive 56 per cent of total sales. The Dzire’s mix of comfort, efficiency and value clearly paid off.

Hyundai Creta and Tata Nexon Close Behind

Right behind the Dzire was the ever-popular Hyundai Creta, which finished second with 201,122 units. The midsize SUV posted an 8 per cent year-on-year growth and climbed three positions compared to 2024. Its wide powertrain choices, including petrol, diesel and electric versions, continued to attract a broad set of buyers.

Taking third place was the Tata Nexon, which delivered one of its strongest performances ever. With 200,561 units sold, the Nexon grew by 24 per cent and jumped seven positions on the chart. Its strong safety image, refreshed design and multiple powertrain options helped it stay firmly in demand.

Maruti’s Strong Presence Continues

Despite losing the top spot, Maruti Suzuki WagonR still put up solid numbers. It slipped to fourth place with 194,238 units, though growth was limited to just 2 per cent. The Maruti Ertiga followed closely in fifth with 192,025 units, recording a modest 1 per cent increase.

The Maruti Swift held on to sixth position with 189,261 units, growing by 10 per cent, while the Maruti Fronx emerged as one of the fastest risers. Finishing seventh with 179,894 units, the Fronx posted a 15 per cent year-on-year growth, highlighting the growing appeal of compact crossovers.

SUV Muscle and Falling Giants

Among SUVs, the Mahindra Scorpio stood out by climbing to eighth place with 176,988 units sold. Diesel power continued to dominate Scorpio demand, accounting for a massive 95 per cent of its sales, underlining the SUV’s tough and traditional appeal.

On the flip side, two former stars faced sharp declines. The Maruti Suzuki Brezza dropped to ninth place with 175,310 units, registering a 7 per cent fall in sales. Even more striking was the performance of the Tata Punch, which had been the best-selling car in 2024. In 2025, it slipped to tenth place after sales fell by 14 per cent to 173,502 units.

Skoda Octavia RS: A Sporty Sensation

While mass-market models battled it out on the sales charts, Skoda created its own moment of glory with the Octavia RS. Introduced in 2025 with a limited allocation, the performance sedan proved its massive appeal by selling out its first batch of just 100 units within minutes.

Buoyed by the overwhelming response from enthusiasts, Skoda has now confirmed that another batch of the Octavia RS will arrive in India in late 2026. This announcement has already sparked excitement among car lovers, showing that even in a market driven by practicality, there is still strong love for performance and driving pleasure.

Overall, 2025 was a year of big shifts, strong comebacks and fresh surprises for the Indian car market and if these trends continue, the years ahead promise even more action on the sales charts.
