India’s car market started 2026 on a powerful note, and January clearly proved that SUVs continue to rule the roads. From compact city-friendly models to rugged body-on-frame SUVs, buyers showed strong interest across segments, pushing overall sales sharply higher compared to last year.

Leading the charge was the Tata Nexon, which didn’t just perform well it dominated. Already India’s third-highest-selling car in 2025, the Nexon climbed straight to the number one position in January 2026. Tata Motors sold 23,365 units, a massive jump of 7,968 units, translating into a 51.75% year-on-year growth. This surge highlights how much buyers value the Nexon’s wide choice of powertrains, modern styling and strong safety reputation.

Right behind it was another Tata Motors success story the Tata Punch. The compact SUV continued its steady rise by selling 19,257 units, marking an 18.64% growth compared to January last year. The Punch has carved a loyal customer base thanks to its tough design, compact footprint and availability across petrol, CNG and electric versions, making it appealing to both urban and semi-urban buyers.

Claiming the third spot was the Hyundai Creta, a long-time favourite in the mid-size SUV space. The Creta recorded 17,921 units in January 2026. However, unlike others in the top five, it saw a slight dip of 3.24% year-on-year, indicating growing competition in a segment that’s now more crowded than ever.

Close on its heels was the Maruti Brezza, which posted 17,486 units in sales. That figure represents a healthy 18.57% growth over January 2025, showing that Maruti Suzuki’s strong brand trust and fuel-efficient offerings still resonate strongly with Indian buyers.

The Mahindra Scorpio family including both the Classic and N versions secured the fifth position. With 15,542 units sold, the Scorpio maintained steady momentum, growing marginally by 0.65% year-on-year. Its rugged appeal and strong road presence continue to make it a favourite among buyers looking for a tough, no-nonsense SUV.

One of the most talked-about entries on the list was the Maruti Victoris, which ranked sixth with 15,240 units sold. Positioned below the Grand Vitara, the Victoris has quickly found acceptance, especially among customers looking for a fresh mid-size SUV with Maruti’s reliability.

The Maruti Fronx came in seventh with 13,353 units, but unlike some rivals, it saw a 12.11% decline compared to last year. While still popular, increasing competition in the compact crossover space may be affecting its numbers.

In eighth place was the Hyundai Venue, which benefited from its recent redesign. The sub-4 metre SUV sold 12,413 units, growing by 11.77% year-on-year. The updated design and improved features appear to be working in its favour.

The Mahindra Bolero continued to surprise many by securing the ninth spot. With 11,841 units sold, it recorded a strong 36.39% growth, proving that there’s still strong demand for simple, rugged vehicles in rural and semi-urban markets.

Rounding off the top ten was the Kia Sonet, which delivered one of the highest growth rates on the chart. Sales stood at 10,998 units, marking a sharp 52.88% increase compared to January last year. Its sharp design, feature-rich cabin and multiple engine options are clearly paying off.

Overall, the top 10 cars combined sold 1,57,416 units, up from 1,22,513 units last year—an impressive 28.49% growth, underlining the strong momentum in India’s passenger vehicle market.
