January 2026 Electric Car Sales:

The electric passenger vehicle segment began the new calendar year on a confident and energetic note, with established manufacturers once again accounting for the bulk of volumes. At the forefront was Tata Motors, which continued to assert its dominance in the EV space through a well-diversified portfolio. The undisputed star of January 2026 was the Tata Nexon EV, registering an impressive 3,098 units and reinforcing its position as the most popular electric car in the country. Close behind was the MG Windsor with 2,567 units, highlighting the growing appeal of feature-rich, globally engineered EVs among Indian buyers. The momentum at the top of the charts indicates that consumers are steadily gravitating toward practical electric SUVs that offer a balanced mix of range, performance and everyday usability.
The competition intensified further down the rankings, with the Tata Harrier EV securing third place at 1,995 units. It was closely followed by the Mahindra XEV 9e, which posted 1,945 units and demonstrated how quickly new-age electric offerings are gaining acceptance. Tata’s depth in the EV lineup was evident yet again as the Tata Tiago EV recorded 1,223 units while the Tata Curvv EV added 1,100 units to the tally. Meanwhile, Mahindra & Mahindra strengthened its footprint with the Mahindra BE6 crossing the 1,000-unit mark at 1,028 units. The Tata Punch EV contributed 980 units, reflecting steady demand in the compact electric SUV space. Rounding off the top ten were the MG Comet EV with 766 units and the Mahindra XEV 9S at 612 units, the latter signalling a promising response for one of the newest entrants in the category.

From a manufacturer standpoint, Tata Motors remained firmly in control with 8,616 units sold in January, translating to a commanding 52.4 per cent market share. This level of dominance underscores the brand’s early-mover advantage, expansive charging ecosystem support and a product range that spans multiple price brackets. MG Motor secured second position with 3,731 units and a 22.7 per cent share, with the Windsor EV alone accounting for a significant portion of its overall volumes. Mahindra & Mahindra followed closely with 3,660 units and a 22.2 per cent market share, reinforcing the idea that India’s EV passenger vehicle market is fast evolving into a three-horse race. Further down the order, Hyundai Motor India registered 247 units, primarily supported by models such as the Hyundai Creta EV. Kia India posted 178 units, while Citroen India recorded 24 units. With more launches on the horizon and charging infrastructure expanding steadily across urban and semi-urban centres, competition is expected to intensify further, particularly in the compact and midsize electric SUV segments as both legacy brands and upcoming entrants prepare to strengthen their positions.
