If you want car delivery before Diwali 2026, the deadline is tighter than the festive ads suggest. As of October 6, Dhanteras falls on November 6 and Diwali on November 8, which leaves 31 and 33 days. Anything with a waiting period longer than about four weeks is already out of the running unless a dealer has a car in the yard.
We went through the September 2026 city-wise waiting period tables from CarDekho and the latest FADA data to sort the market into three buckets: cars you can realistically get, cars that are a coin toss, and cars you should stop chasing for this Diwali.
The deadline, in weeks
A waiting period quoted in months is easy to misread. One month is about 4.3 weeks, so a quoted one month wait booked today lands within a day or two of Dhanteras. A wait quoted as one to one and a half months can land anywhere from Dhanteras to mid-November. Two months means the first week of December.
Navratri begins on October 11, so dealerships will see a booking surge in the next few days. FADA’s August data shows dealer stock at 38 to 40 days industry-wide, against its 21-day benchmark, and 56 percent of dealers reported higher stock month on month. In other words, the industry has cars, but not always the ones you want, and brands that are overstocked are the ones that will bargain.
Bucket one: realistic for Dhanteras
CarDekho’s September table for Tata calls the Curvv ICE and the Tigor EV the most readily available across all 20 cities, at around a month. Punch and Punch EV are listed at one to one and a half months, and the Harrier at one to one and a half months in most cities.
On the Toyota side, the Taisor is the quickest, at two to four weeks in cities such as Thane, Chandigarh, Coimbatore, Faridabad and Indore, and the Glanza is about a month in most metros, based on CarDekho’s Toyota tables. The Innova Crysta is mostly one month, except Delhi at three. These are dealer-reported ranges, not OEM promises, so ask for an allotment date in writing. Dealers in smaller cities tend to quote shorter waits than Mumbai or Delhi, so it can pay to compare quotes from a dealer in a neighbouring town, provided the car is registered where you live.
If a Tata discount is also on your mind, our Tata September discounts report lists what is on offer, and the supply picture suggests you have room to negotiate.
Bucket two: a coin toss
Maruti is the awkward one. Executive Partho Banerjee has said Maruti has 1.80 lakh pending bookings and only 15 to 16 days of dealer stock, so ready cars are scarce even if a particular model has a short quoted wait. Maruti expects supply to ease from January 2027, not before Diwali.
Nexon is another borderline case. CarDekho’s table shows one to one and a half months in metros like Bengaluru and Jaipur, and two months in New Delhi and Hyderabad. The Safari is one to two months depending on city. Mahindra’s Bolero range sits at one to two months in most cities per CarDekho’s Mahindra table. For all of these, your odds depend on whether your dealer has the exact variant and colour allotted.
Bucket three: stop chasing a Diwali date
Mahindra’s electric seven-seater, the XEV 9S, runs up to eight months in Mumbai and four to seven months in Delhi according to CarDekho. The XEV 9e and BE 6 sit at four to five months in Mumbai. The XUV 7XO is three to four months in several tier-1 cities.
Toyota’s Innova Hycross is the extreme case, at six to eight months in Pune, Jaipur and Surat, and three to four months in Delhi, Mumbai and Ahmedabad. If one of these is your dream car, book it now and enjoy it in 2027. Do not tell your family it is coming for Lakshmi Puja.
Our guide on whether to wait for new launches explains why a long queue is often a reason to look at an alternative rather than to keep waiting.
How to use this before you book
Step one: get the actual waiting period for your city, variant and colour, not a national figure. The same Hycross is a three-month wait in Ahmedabad and six months or more in Surat. Step two: ask for the allotted VIN and expected invoice date. Step three: work backwards from November 6. If the date does not clear it, either switch to a ready car or accept a December delivery.
Step four: keep the token refundable and note the cancellation terms in writing, because a booking you cannot cancel is the only thing that turns a missed date into a real loss. Step five: compare against pre-owned only if you must have a car in the driveway for the festival, and read our best time to buy a car guide before paying for the muhurat. A lucky date is worth very little if you pay full price for a model that has an overstocked twin elsewhere.
Final Verdict
Car delivery before Diwali 2026 is realistic for Tata’s Curvv, Punch and Harrier, for the Toyota Taisor and Glanza, and for the Innova Crysta in most cities, with a booking made this week. Maruti, Nexon, Safari and the Bolero range depend on dealer stock. The XEV 9S, XUV 7XO and Innova Hycross will not arrive in time in most cities.
Book by Navratri, ask for a written date, and be ready to pivot. Waiting periods are dealer-reported ranges that shift weekly, so reconfirm before you pay.

What is the last date to book a car for Diwali 2026?
Dhanteras is November 6 and Diwali is November 8. A car with a one-month waiting period booked on October 6 lands around Dhanteras, so for anything longer, book immediately and confirm an allotment date.
Which cars have the shortest waiting period this festive season?
CarDekho’s September tables show the Tata Curvv ICE and Tigor EV at about one month, the Toyota Taisor at two to four weeks in several cities, and Glanza at about a month in most metros.
Which cars will not be delivered before Diwali?
The Mahindra XEV 9S, XEV 9e, BE 6 Sporteq, XUV 7XO and Toyota Innova Hycross are all listed at three months or more in most major cities, so a Diwali delivery is unlikely.
Why is Maruti delivery uncertain?
Maruti has said it has 1.80 lakh pending bookings and only about 15 to 16 days of dealer stock, with supply expected to improve from January 2027 as new capacity ramps up.
