The passenger vehicle market kicked off the new year on a strong and positive note, showing healthy growth compared to the same month last year. In January 2026, total dispatches across major carmakers stood at 4,52,589 units, clearly higher than the 4,01,538 units recorded in January 2025, marking an impressive year-on-year growth of 12.7 per cent. This jump shows that buyer confidence remains strong and that demand for new cars continues to rise steadily across the country. Even though Maruti Suzuki once again held its top spot as the market leader, much of the growth momentum actually came from Tata Motors and Mahindra, both of which posted strong double-digit increases in sales. The overall market trend also reflects how buyers are increasingly leaning toward SUVs and practical utility vehicles, which are now the main drivers of sales for many brands. These larger and feature-rich models are attracting families and young buyers alike, helping carmakers push higher volumes. Maruti Suzuki reported sales of 1,74,529 units in January 2026, slightly higher than the 1,73,599 units sold in January 2025. While this translated to only a 0.5 per cent growth, the company’s massive scale ensured it remained the single biggest contributor to the industry’s total sales. Its consistent performance and wide product lineup continue to keep it firmly at the top of the sales chart.

Tata Motors turned out to be one of the biggest highlights of the month with a remarkable surge in sales. The brand recorded 70,222 units in January 2026 compared to 48,075 units in the same month last year, registering a huge growth of 46.1 per cent. This sharp rise was mainly supported by strong demand for popular models like the Nexon and Punch, along with the company’s growing electric vehicle lineup that continues to attract new buyers. Mahindra followed closely behind with 63,510 units, reflecting a solid 25.4 per cent increase over the 50,659 units it sold a year ago. The brand’s rugged and reliable SUVs such as the Bolero, Scorpio, Thar and XUV range continue to perform well in both urban and rural markets, helping Mahindra maintain strong momentum. Hyundai also delivered a good performance with total domestic sales of 59,107 units, showing a steady growth of 9.5 per cent compared to January 2025. Toyota reported a strong month too, with sales rising 17 per cent to reach 30,630 units, thanks to the consistent popularity of its MPVs and rebadged models that appeal to a wide range of buyers. Kia maintained a stable upward trend, selling 27,603 units and posting a 10.3 per cent year-on-year growth, showing that its stylish and feature-packed models continue to draw customers.

Honda recorded sales of 6,193 units in January 2026, slightly higher than the 6,103 units it sold in January 2025, resulting in a modest growth of 1.5 per cent. Among the smaller players, Skoda and Renault stood out by posting notable growth figures of 38.9 per cent and 33.6 per cent respectively, indicating rising interest in their latest offerings. Citroën showed the highest percentage growth at 125.1 per cent, although this increase came from a relatively low base, meaning its total volumes were still smaller compared to larger brands. On the other hand, not every company enjoyed a positive month. Volkswagen and Jeep faced declines in sales, highlighting how competitive and fast-changing the market has become. Overall, the numbers from January 2026 paint a lively and optimistic picture for the passenger vehicle segment. Strong SUV demand, improving customer sentiment and fresh product offerings have all contributed to a solid start to the year. If this momentum continues, the coming months could bring even stronger performances from many carmakers, making 2026 an exciting year for the Indian automobile market and for buyers looking to bring home a new vehicle.
