car sales September 2026 India
Car sales September 2026 India were stronger than August almost across the board. Maruti Suzuki, Tata, Mahindra, Hyundai, Kia and MG all sent more cars to dealers, and retail registrations climbed 6.17% to 427,213 units. Toyota was the lone big name that went backwards.
The dispatch figures below are each carmaker’s own wholesale numbers, as reported in Autocar Professional, Autocar Professional and Mahindra’s press release. Retail figures come from Rushlane. Dispatches are shipments to dealers, retail is what customers register.
Car Sales September 2026 India vs August: Carmaker-wise Wholesales
Maruti Suzuki dispatched 181,838 domestic passenger vehicles in September against 176,971 in August, a gain of 2.75%. Including exports and light commercial vehicles, its total rose 7.66% to 236,013 units from 219,220. Utility vehicles did the heavy lifting, with 78,911 units, up 62.05% on September 2025.
Tata Motors reported 70,210 passenger vehicles against 67,753 in August, up 3.63%, and 15.27% above last September. Mahindra sold 64,092 SUVs against 59,257, a rise of 8.16%, while its total vehicle sales, including commercial vehicles and exports, climbed 6.71% to 114,874 units.
Hyundai, Kia and MG Also Climbed
Hyundai Motor India posted its highest-ever monthly total of 77,916 units, up 18.42% from 65,796 in August. Domestic sales rose 5.09% to 57,166 units, and exports nearly doubled from 11,400 to 20,750, which explains most of the record.
Kia grew the fastest in the domestic market, with wholesales up 10.24% from 29,042 to 32,017 units. JSW MG Motor dispatched 8,018 units against 7,508 in August, a 6.79% gain, and 19% above September 2025.
Toyota: The One Carmaker That Fell
Toyota Kirloskar Motor dispatched 25,027 units domestically against 28,410 in August, a drop of 11.91%. Including exports of 3,191 units, its total was 28,218. We cover the details in our Toyota India sales September 2026 analysis.
The slide looks more like a restocking pause than lost demand, because Toyota’s retail registrations of 28,050 units ran about 3,000 above its domestic dispatches.
Retail Told the Demand Story
Retail registrations reached 427,213 units, up 6.17% from August and 32.10% above September 2025. Maruti Suzuki retailed 169,132 units, a 39.59% share, followed by Mahindra at 57,343, Tata at 57,254 and Hyundai at 50,201.
The race for second place is a photo finish at retail. Mahindra led Tata by just 89 units. On dispatches, Tata’s 70,210 passenger vehicles include exports and EVs, so the two cannot be compared one for one with Mahindra’s 64,092 SUVs.
What the Fuel Mix Shows
Petrol and ethanol blends accounted for 41.27% of September retail sales. Hybrids took 9.44% and electric vehicles 8.45%, according to Rushlane. Together those two electrified categories made up nearly one in five cars sold.
That is a striking share for a market where EVs were a rounding error a few years ago, and it explains why Tata, Mahindra, Kia and even Maruti keep adding electric models.
What This Means for Buyers
A month where most carmakers grew and retail ran ahead of dispatches points to a busy festive season. Showrooms are moving cars, so deep discounts on popular models are less likely than in a slow month, while slower sellers may still carry offers.
Check variant availability and delivery timelines before you book, because strong demand tends to stretch waiting periods on the most popular SUVs.
Final Verdict
Car sales September 2026 India show a healthy market heading into the festive season. Almost every major carmaker grew over August, Hyundai set a record, Kia grew the fastest and retail registrations hit 427,213 units. Toyota’s dip is the exception, and its retail numbers suggest it is a stock story rather than a demand problem.
