Nissan India September 2026 Sales: Domestic Doubled, But Two of Every Three Cars Went Abroad

Nissan India September 2026 sales came in at 10,025 units, and the number everyone will quote is the doubling of domestic wholesale: 3,300 units against 1,652 in September 2025, according to Autocar Pro. It is a genuine milestone for a brand with a small base in India.

But two details deserve more attention than the headline. First, exports were 6,725 units, so about two of every three Nissans built for the month left the country. Second, retail registrations were lower than domestic dispatches, which is a gap that matters for the festive season ahead.

The official wholesale numbers

All figures in this section are wholesale, meaning dispatches from the factory, not customer registrations. Nissan Motor India dispatched 10,025 units in September 2026: 3,300 for the domestic market and 6,725 for export. The domestic figure is up 100% from 1,652 units a year earlier.

Nissan attributed the rise to festive inventory build-up and steady export shipments from its Indian plant, as reported in regional wire coverage. Managing Director Saurabh Vatsa said the growing domestic volumes give the company a foundation to build scale in India.

Exports account for roughly 67% of the month. Put differently, the domestic business that gets the attention in India is a third of what the plant actually ships. That matters for how seriously you should take any one month of Indian numbers as a signal about Nissan’s health.

The cumulative total is the other number in the release: Nissan’s combined dispatches crossed 10,000 units in the month. That is a company-wide figure, so do not read it as an Indian sales milestone. Only the 3,300 domestic units count toward Indian demand.

Retail: what customers actually registered

Retail is the other half of the story. The Vahan registration table shows Nissan at 2,967 registrations in September 2026, up 115.2% from 1,379 a year ago. Another Vahan-based tracker, carhp, shows 2,942 units and a 5% rise over August. The two differ by only about 25 units, so we can say retail was roughly 2,940 to 2,970.

Set that beside 3,300 domestic dispatches and you get a gap of about 330 to 360 units. Nissan sent dealers roughly 11% more cars than customers took home. That is exactly what you expect in the weeks before Navratri and Diwali, when dealers stock up, and it matches Nissan’s own explanation of festive inventory build-up.

Last September had a similar gap in a smaller form. Domestic dispatches were 1,652 against 1,379 registrations, an excess of about 270 units, or 20%. The dealer stock cushion is smaller in relative terms this year, which is a good sign. Be careful with one thing, though: the dispatch figure comes from Nissan and the registration figure comes from Vahan trackers, so the comparison is directional, not exact to the unit.

Retail grew faster than dispatches

Here is the insight I find most useful. Domestic wholesale grew 100% year on year. Retail grew about 115%. When retail outgrows dispatches, the brand is not stuffing the channel. It is selling through.

In market-share terms, 2,967 registrations out of the 420,359 passenger vehicles in that same Vahan table is about 0.71%. A year ago, 1,379 out of 318,907 was about 0.43%. The share is still small, but it has moved by roughly 0.28 percentage points in twelve months, in a market that itself grew 31.8%.

For context, we covered an earlier surge in Nissan’s 147% jump that was measured against a weaker base. The latest numbers suggest that the recovery is not a one-month blip, though one more festive month will settle it.

Which models are doing the work

Nissan credits its SUV line: the Magnite, the Gravite and the newly launched Tekton. Model-wise September figures had not been published when we wrote this, so I will not guess at the split. What we can say is that the whole domestic range is now SUV or crossover-shaped, which suits where Indian demand has moved.

The Tekton is the strategic bet. We explained its positioning in our Tekton launch report, and its job is to give Nissan a bigger SUV to sell alongside the smaller ones. The Magnite carries volume at the entry level and the Gravite adds a family option, a line-up we compared in our Gravite against Fronx and Kiger comparison.

The export dependence question

Is it a weakness that two thirds of production goes overseas? Not necessarily. Exports keep the plant loaded and spread the fixed cost, which in principle helps Nissan price its India models sharply at home. But it does mean Nissan’s India fortunes are tied to overseas demand and shipping schedules as much as to Indian showrooms.

The risk is that a single weak export month can drag the total down even when domestic is strong. Honda’s September showed the mirror image, with exports up on August and domestic down. Watch both lines separately, and always label which one you are quoting.

Final Verdict

Nissan India September 2026 sales are a real success story at home: domestic wholesale doubled to 3,300, and retail of about 2,950 grew even faster. The caveats are fair. Dispatches ran roughly 11% ahead of registrations, and exports are still two thirds of the volume. My view is that the recovery is real, but the test comes in October and November, when retail must stay near 3,000 without the festive stocking effect.
