Buying a second hand car in India is one of the smartest financial decisions you can make, if you pick the right model. A 2019 Swift VXI with under 50,000 km is a genuinely excellent daily driver. You won’t get a sunroof or cruise control, but you will get a car that starts every morning, costs little to maintain, and holds resale value better than any hatchback in this range.
Price-to-value verdict: Among the best in the used market. Buy it without overthinking.
2. Hyundai Creta (2018–2021, 1st Gen Facelift)
Used Price Range: ₹8 – ₹13 Lakh
The Creta is the compact SUV that every Indian family wants, and the pre-owned market reflects that. A 2020 Creta SX petrol with under 60,000 km offers a premium interior, decent feature list, and the peace of mind of Hyundai’s strong dealer network. The 1.5-litre petrol engine is smooth and low-maintenance. The only variant to avoid is the 1.4-litre turbo petrol from this generation, it had reported issues and higher service costs. Stick to the naturally aspirated 1.5.
Price-to-value verdict: Outstanding. You get genuine SUV comfort at a price that would only buy you a base petrol hatchback new.
3. Maruti Suzuki Ertiga (2018–2022)
Used Price Range: ₹7 – ₹11 Lakh
For families of five or more, the Ertiga is the most practical used buy in India, full stop. The K15 petrol engine is efficient and tough, the three-row layout handles real Indian family travel, and the CNG variants from this period offer running costs that are genuinely hard to beat. Pre-owned Ertigas from 2019–2021 in VXI or ZXI trim are widely available, well-maintained, and priced fairly by the market.
Price-to-value verdict: Exceptional for family buyers. Nothing in this price range gives you 7 seats and these running costs.
4. Tata Nexon (2020–2022)
Used Price Range: ₹8 – ₹12 Lakh
The Nexon earned a 5-star Global NCAP rating and became the car that made Indian buyers take safety seriously. A 2020–2021 Nexon XZ+ petrol is a well-rounded package, good road presence, a solid build, connected car features, and enough boot space for real-world use. Tata’s spare part pricing has improved significantly, and the brand’s service quality in metro and Tier 1 cities is reliable. This generation had a few infotainment software issues reported by owners, but nothing mechanically concerning.
Price-to-value verdict: Strong. Safety credentials alone justify the premium over a Creta of the same year.
5. Honda City (2017–2020, 4th Gen)
Used Price Range: ₹7 – ₹11 Lakh
The Honda City is the most underrated second hand buy in India. While the market has moved toward SUVs, the fourth-generation City, particularly the 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol, remains one of the finest sedans ever sold in this country. The engine is refined and long-lived, the rear seat space is genuinely generous, and Honda’s build quality means these cars age well. 6. Kia Seltos (2020–2022)
Used Price Range: ₹11 – ₹16 Lakh
The first-generation Seltos has held its resale value well, which both reflects its quality and means you’ll pay a fair price for it. A 2021 Seltos HTX+ or GTX turbo petrol in this range gives you a feature list that rivals new cars at ₹15 lakh today. Kia’s service network has matured, parts availability is consistent, and the 1.4-litre turbo petrol delivers strong performance without major reliability concerns. This is the aspirational used buy for buyers who want a modern, feature-loaded SUV without paying new car prices.
Price-to-value verdict: You’re paying for a car that still feels current. Worth every rupee if your budget stretches here.
