Hatchbacks Still Sell: India’s Top 10 Best-Selling Hatchbacks in FY2025-26

SUVs have been eating into every segment for the last five years. Yet, when the FY2025-26 numbers came in, hatchbacks proved they aren’t going anywhere. The segment moved serious volume, led again by Maruti Suzuki, and threw up a few surprises worth paying attention to.

Maruti Swept the Top Three, Again

Best-selling hatchbacks India FY2025-26

The Swift took the crown in FY26 with 1,85,350 units, a 3% improvement over the previous year’s 1,79,641 units. It’s consistent, it’s popular in both urban and semi-urban markets, and it keeps refreshing its appeal just enough to stay relevant.

Right behind it was the Wagon R at 1,80,134 units. That number actually fell 9% from 1,98,451 units in FY25, a dip worth watching. The Wagon R has always been a practical buy for families, but that decline suggests buyers may be moving up to entry-level SUVs or the Tiago’s CNG value proposition is cutting into its turf.

Third was the Baleno at 1,72,560 units, up 3% from 1,67,161 units. The Baleno continues to sit in a sweet spot between premium feel and affordable pricing, and the numbers back that up.

The Alto Is Fading, and That’s a Real Signal

The Alto finished fourth at 93,740 units, down 8% from 1,02,232 units in FY25. For a car that once stood as the definitive first-time buyer’s choice, this is a slow but clear decline. With entry-level CNG options like the Tiago and even used cars becoming more accessible, the sub-4 lakh segment is getting squeezed from multiple directions.

Tata Tiago Was the Real Winner of FY26

The Tiago deserves more attention than it usually gets. It closed FY26 with 83,035 units, a 20% jump from 69,234 units in FY25. That’s the highest growth rate in the top 10 by some distance.

What’s driving it? Three things:

  • Fuel flexibility, petrol, CNG, and EV variants mean the Tiago has an answer for almost every buyer profile
  • Competitive pricing, especially strong on CNG, where running costs matter most to value buyers
  • EV pull, the Tiago.ev gives Tata a foothold in the entry-level electric segment that no other brand currently matches

Hyundai Had a Rough Year in Hatchbacks

The Grand i10 Nios slipped 9% to 56,750 units. The i20 also fell 9% to 50,596 units. Together, these declines indicate that Hyundai’s hatchback buyers may be gravitating toward the Exter or Venue instead. As Hyundai pushes further into the compact SUV space, its own hatchback lineup appears to be cannibalising itself.

The Toyota Glanza, which shares its platform with the Baleno, managed 52,548 units, an 8% rise over 48,839 units. Toyota’s dealer network and strong resale perception continue to give the Glanza a loyal base.

The Tata Altroz also posted an 8% gain to 38,153 units, showing steady momentum in the premium hatchback space. It’s not a high-volume car, but its trajectory is clearly upward.

Ignis Is Done, Officially

The Maruti Suzuki Ignis closed FY26 at 22,924 units, its worst-ever performance, down 16% from 27,438 units in FY25. Maruti has confirmed the model will be discontinued in India. The quirky crossover-hatchback never found the volume it needed, and in a market that increasingly wants either a proper hatchback or a proper SUV, the Ignis fell between stools.

Standout Takeaways

The Ignis discontinuation closes a chapter, Maruti will likely use that bandwidth to push stronger volume models instead

Tiago’s 20% growth is the strongest performance in the top 10, and it’s entirely demand-driven, not discounting-led

Wagon R, Grand i10 Nios, and i20 all fell 9% in the same fiscal, a pattern that may reflect buyers stepping up to compact SUVs
