The headline on Honda Cars India September 2026 sales looks ugly: total wholesales of 6,955 units, down 14.09% from 8,096 a year ago, per Autocar Pro and Rushlane. Domestic dispatches fell 15.8% to 4,465 units. If you stop reading there, you would think Honda is losing the festive season.
I think that reading is wrong, and the reason is the difference between wholesale (what the factory dispatches to dealers) and retail (what customers actually register). In September 2026 Honda’s dealers appear to have sold more cars than Honda sent them. That is the opposite of a demand problem, and this article lays out the arithmetic.
The wholesale picture: what Honda officially reported
Everything in this section is wholesale, meaning dispatches from Honda to its dealers, not customer deliveries. Honda reported 6,955 units in September 2026: 4,465 domestic and 2,490 exports. Domestic dispatches were down about 15.8% year on year from 5,303 units and down 17.08% from the 5,385 units of August.

Exports went the other way sequentially. Shipments rose 17.29% from 2,123 units in August to 2,490 in September, though they remain 10.85% below last September’s 2,793. Exports were roughly 36% of Honda’s total volume for the month, which is a high share for a brand most buyers think of as a domestic player.
Honda’s own commentary pointed to positive momentum for the City and the Amaze, and to the refreshed Elevate arriving to stock dealerships for the festive retail season. Read between the lines and the message is that dispatches were light while the company waited for the new Elevate.
The retail picture: Vahan says demand was stronger
Now switch to retail. Vahan registration trackers put Honda at about 5,283 units in September 2026 in the AutoPunditz Vahan table, up 42.5% from 3,707 a year earlier. A second Vahan-based tracker, carhp, shows a slightly lower 5,045 units and +1.6% on August. The two trackers differ by a few hundred units because of data pull timing, so treat roughly 5,000 to 5,300 as the honest range.
Compare that range with the 4,465 domestic dispatches. Retail was higher by about 580 to 820 units. Dealers therefore sold down their existing stock instead of replenishing it. A year ago the picture was reversed: Honda dispatched 5,303 domestic units against roughly 3,707 registrations, which means dealers were being loaded with about 1,600 more cars than they sold.
This is the single most useful number in the Honda story. Last September the wholesale figure flattered the brand. This September it understated it. The year-on-year wholesale decline of 15.8% sits next to a retail gain of over 40%, and only one of those two numbers reflects what customers did.
Why Q3 tells a better story than September
Honda’s July to September quarter backs this up. Rushlane reports Q3 domestic wholesales of 15,864 units, up 20.15% year on year, with exports at 6,883 units, down 25.11%, for a total of 22,747 units, up 1.58%. So the quarter grew even after a weak September.
Strip out exports and the domestic business is clearly healthy: three months of 20% growth, with the updated City and the imported ZR-V cited by Honda for the August spike. The drag on the total is entirely the export line, which is lumpy because it depends on shipment schedules rather than showroom traffic.
For anyone tracking Honda as a brand, the lesson is to watch domestic wholesale across a quarter and compare it with Vahan. One month of dispatches is a scheduling decision, not a verdict on demand.
What the empty shelf means for the Elevate refresh
A dealer who sells faster than he is restocked has nothing to show the customer. Honda knows this, which is why it tied the lower September dispatches to the refreshed Elevate. We covered the date in our Elevate facelift launch date report, and the launch took place on October 6, 2026.

The risk is timing. If the new Elevate reaches showrooms late in the festive window, Honda will have burned some of its best selling weeks with thin stock. If it arrives early and in volume, October dispatches will jump and the September dip will look like a pause. Either way, expect the October wholesale figure to rebound.
The City is the quiet performer here. Honda singled it out alongside the Amaze, and our City facelift against the Verna comparison explains why a sedan at that price still finds buyers while SUVs soak up the headlines.
How to read the next Honda number
Three checks will tell you whether this is a pause or a problem. First, October wholesale should rise materially once the Elevate is in the channel. Second, retail should hold above 5,000 units through the festive weeks. Third, the export line should recover toward its earlier levels instead of continuing the Q3 slide.

If wholesale rebounds but retail slips below dispatches, dealers will be heavy again, and discounts will follow. Our ZR-V Hybrid review shows how thin the top of Honda’s range is, so the volume burden still sits on the City, Amaze and Elevate.
Final Verdict
Honda Cars India September 2026 sales were weak on paper and strong on the street. Wholesale fell 14%, but retail registrations in the 5,000 to 5,300 range beat the 4,465 domestic dispatches, which means dealers drained stock ahead of the Elevate refresh. My view: do not call this a slump. Call it a pause, and judge Honda on October dispatches and on whether retail stays above 5,000.
