sub-4-metre SUV sales March 2026
If you needed proof that Tata Motors has firmly planted its flag in the compact SUV space, March 2026 makes it impossible to argue otherwise. The Punch topped the entire sub-four-metre SUV segment with 20,977 units dispatched, an 18 per cent jump over 17,714 units in March 2025. Right behind it sat the Nexon with 19,810 units, up 21 per cent year-on-year. Two Tata models, two top spots. That’s not luck, that’s a strategy playing out exactly as planned.
The Punch’s dominance is particularly interesting because it competes in the entry-level end of the SUV market, where price sensitivity is high and brand loyalty is thin. Yet buyers keep choosing it. A competitive starting price, a wide variant lineup, and the EV option have all helped. The Nexon’s growth is equally telling, it’s one of the few cars in India that you can buy in petrol, diesel, CNG, and electric form. That kind of fuel flexibility is genuinely rare, and Indian buyers are responding to it.

Three numbers that stand out from March 2026:
- Kia Sonet posted a 56 per cent YoY jump, selling 12,012 units against 7,705 units in March 2025, the sharpest growth rate in the top 10
- Mahindra XUV 3XO grew 30 per cent to 9,199 units, showing that the XUV 3XO refresh has legs
- Toyota Taisor dropped 19 per cent to 2,815 units, the steepest decline in the segment this month
March 2026 Sub-4M SUV Sales Rankings
- Tata Punch, 20,977 units (+18% YoY)
- Tata Nexon, 19,810 units (+21% YoY)
- Maruti Suzuki Brezza, 16,130 units (-3% YoY)
- Maruti Suzuki Fronx, 15,540 units (+14% YoY)
- Kia Sonet, 12,012 units (+56% YoY)
- Hyundai Venue, 11,147 units (+7% YoY)
- Mahindra XUV 3XO, 9,199 units (+30% YoY)
- Hyundai Exter, 6,478 units (+10% YoY)
- Skoda Kylaq, 4,670 units (-12% YoY)
- Toyota Taisor, 2,815 units (-19% YoY)

Maruti Suzuki held third and fourth places through the Brezza and Fronx. The Brezza slipped slightly, 16,130 units versus 16,546 a year ago, a 3 per cent dip, but a small decline in a fiercely contested segment doesn’t signal trouble. It’s been a consistent 15,000-plus car for years and that base isn’t going anywhere. The Fronx, on the other hand, grew 14 per cent to 15,540 units, which suggests buyers are genuinely warming up to it as an alternative to the Brezza rather than just an add-on option in showrooms.
The Kia Sonet’s 56 per cent growth is the headline-grabber lower in the table. Going from 7,705 to 12,012 units in a single year is significant. Kia has been quietly working on its dealer network and ownership experience, and that’s starting to show up in the numbers. Its platform-sibling, the Hyundai Venue, grew a more modest 7 per cent to 11,147 units. Both models compete hard for the same buyer, young urban professionals who want a premium feel without paying mid-size SUV money.
Mahindra’s XUV 3XO at 9,199 units and 30 per cent growth is worth watching. Mahindra has historically struggled to consistently crack 10,000 units in the sub-4m space, but the XUV 3XO is getting close. If they sort out supply consistency, a top-six finish could become the norm.
Down at the bottom, Skoda Kylaq and Toyota Taisor both posted declines, 12 per cent and 19 per cent respectively. The Kylaq is a newer entrant still finding its footing, while the Taisor continues to face the challenge of being a rebadged product in a segment where buyers increasingly do their research. A 2,815-unit month for Toyota in this category is thin, and the brand will need to think hard about how it positions the Taisor going forward.
The Hyundai Exter held steady with 6,478 units, up 10 per cent. It carved out a niche at the budget end of the SUV market and seems comfortable sitting there without chasing the volume leaders.
Overall, the sub-4m SUV segment is healthy. Most models are growing, buyer appetite remains strong, and the competitive spread across Tata, Maruti, Kia, Hyundai, and Mahindra means no single brand can go to sleep. With facelifts and new variants likely through mid-2026, these rankings could shift meaningfully in the months ahead.
