Maruti eVitara sales September 2026 slipped to 1,103 units, down 25% from 1,472 in August, while the rest of India’s EV market hit a record. It is an awkward picture for the country’s biggest carmaker: strong everywhere except the one segment it most wants to win next.

The EV figures here are retail registrations reported by Autocar India. We compare them with Maruti’s wider sales further down, and flag where the measures differ.

Maruti eVitara Sales September 2026 vs August: The Numbers

Maruti Suzuki retailed 1,103 electric vehicles in September against 1,472 in August, a loss of 369 units. That is a notable drop, and it came in a month when the overall market grew to a record 35,995 units.

The result is a market share of roughly 3%, which is thin for a company that sells close to 170,000 cars a month in India. Maruti’s EV business is still tiny compared with its petrol, CNG and hybrid sales, and September did nothing to change that.

The Ranking Slide

Kia overtook Maruti for fifth place in September, 1,263 units to 1,103. The top of the table looks very different: Tata sold 14,769, Mahindra 7,779, JSW MG Motor 5,242 and VinFast 2,963. Maruti is now sixth, with BYD at 836 units and Tesla at 291 below it.

Being passed by Kia and VinFast, both newer to the Indian EV race, will sting. It shows that brand strength in combustion cars does not automatically convert into EV demand.

The Toyota Twin Did Not Save It

Toyota sells a sibling of the eVitara as the Urban Cruiser Ebella, and that car did grow, from 168 units in August to 218 in September, an increase of 30%. It is a small gain.

Add the two together and the family still fell. Maruti and Toyota combined sold 1,321 units in September against 1,640 in August, a drop of about 19%. So this is not simply a case of customers choosing the Toyota badge over the Maruti one.

Strong Overall, Weak in EVs

Maruti’s broader numbers look healthier. Its domestic passenger vehicle wholesales rose 2.75% from 176,971 in August to 181,838 in September, and are 36.91% above September 2025, per Autocar Professional. Rushlane’s retail data shows 169,132 units against 167,200 in August.

The contrast is the point. A company that can hold close to 170,000 retail sales a month cannot yet get more than a thousand or so buyers a month to choose its EV. Price, charging access and buyer perception all play a part, and none of them is solved by a bigger dealer network.

What This Means for Buyers

If you are considering the eVitara, a falling sales trend is not a quality warning. It does mean you may have room to negotiate, so ask about festive-season offers, and check what Maruti’s service network can do for EV maintenance in your city.

Compare it directly with the Tata, Mahindra and Kia options at similar prices, and weigh real-world range and charger availability above brand familiarity.

Final Verdict

Maruti eVitara sales September 2026 show a car that is still searching for its audience. A 25% monthly drop, a lost fifth place and a falling combined Maruti and Toyota total all point the same way. Maruti has the reach to turn this around, but the numbers say reach alone is not enough.
