Tata EV model-wise sales September 2026 tell a more interesting story than the headline. At brand level, Tata sold a record 14,769 electric cars on a retail (Vahan registration) basis, up from 13,806 in August, according to Autocar Pro. That is 963 more cars, a 7.0% rise. But underneath that tidy number, three models grew hard and four shrank.

A scope note first. The brand totals above come from Autocar Pro. The model-wise split comes from ElecTree’s Vahan tables, the only complete model-level September set I could find, and its seven models add up to 14,891 for September and 13,826 for August. That runs about 0.8% above the brand figure for September, so treat the model numbers as directional. Every number below is retail. No wholesale (dispatch) figure is mixed in.

The August vs September table, in prose

Here is the month-on-month picture, with change in units and in percent computed from ElecTree’s registrations. Punch EV: 3,571 to 4,666, up 1,095 or 30.7%. Nexon EV: 2,844 to 3,469, up 625 or 22.0%. Sierra EV: 1,444 to 1,951, up 507 or 35.1%.

On the other side, Tiago EV: 2,435 to 1,601, down 834 or 34.3%. Harrier EV: 1,831 to 1,591, down 240 or 13.1%. Xpres-T, the fleet-focused model: 445 to 369, down 76 or 17.1%. Curvv EV was essentially flat at 1,256 to 1,244, down 12 or 1.0%.

Net across the seven models, that is plus 1,065 units, or 7.7%. The brand-level 7.0% is the number to quote, since it is the cleaner source. The model-level 7.7% is the same story with slightly different rounding in the data.

Three winners did all the work

Punch EV, Nexon EV and Sierra EV together added 2,227 registrations. The other four models together lost 1,162. So the entire September record rests on a three-car core, which now makes up about 68% of Tata EV registrations, up from about 57% in August.

Punch EV is the anchor. At 4,666 units it was the best-selling electric car in the country in September on the ElecTree table, and the Empowered+ S variant alone accounted for 3,208 of those. The 40 kWh version dominated, so the buyer is clearly paying for range and features, not hunting for the cheapest entry point.

That is notable because Tata raised Punch EV prices by up to ₹20,000 in September, as covered in our Punch EV price hike report. A model that gets dearer and still grows 30.7% is a model with real demand, not one being pushed with offers.

Tiago EV: the quiet 834-unit hole

Tiago EV is the real surprise. It lost more units than any other Tata EV, falling from 2,435 to 1,601. Autopunditz lists clearance-style offers of up to ₹1.45 lakh on outgoing Tiago EV stock in its September offers roundup, yet registrations fell by a third.

I will not pretend to know the cause. The data does not say, and I could not find an official explanation. What it does show is that discounting did not rescue the model. Two readings fit: buyers are trading up to Punch EV for a modest price gap, or August was inflated by fleet and festive-pull buying that did not repeat. I lean towards the first, but it is an inference.

If you are shopping in this segment, a weak sales month plus stock-clearing offers can mean a better deal for you. Check the exact variant and stock position at the dealer before you assume the headline discount applies.

Discounts did not predict sales

This is the insight a spec-sheet rewrite misses. Autopunditz reports September benefits of up to ₹3.35 lakh on Curvv EV and up to ₹2.75 lakh on Harrier EV, the two biggest discounts on the range. Nexon EV got only about ₹45,000. Our own Tata September discounts post covers the petrol and diesel side.

Now look at the results. Curvv EV was flat, down 1.0%. Harrier EV fell 13.1%. Nexon EV, with the smallest incentive, grew 22.0%. The heavily discounted models stalled and the barely discounted one climbed. That points to product pull, not price cuts, as the driver of volume. Curvv EV and Harrier EV needed the money to stand still.

Sierra EV tells the same story from a different angle. It grew 35.1% to 1,951 units with no discount push mentioned in the sources I read, as the model keeps ramping up after its first customer handovers, which we covered in Sierra EV’s first delivery.

What about Battery as a Service?

Tata extended Battery as a Service to Nexon EV, Curvv EV, Sierra EV and Harrier EV on 28 September, per Autocar India, covering the whole range with prices from ₹4.69 lakh for Tiago EV to ₹14.49 lakh for Harrier EV.

That is only the last three days of the month, so it cannot explain the September numbers. If anything, it makes October the real test. Harrier EV and Curvv EV, the two models that stalled, are the ones most likely to benefit from a lower sticker price. Watch their October registrations, not the brand total.

Final Verdict

September 2026 was a record for Tata EV at 14,769 retail registrations, up 963 or 7.0% on August’s 13,806, but it was a three-model record. Punch EV, Nexon EV and Sierra EV carried it, while Tiago EV, Harrier EV, Xpres-T and Curvv EV combined to lose 1,162 units. A brand that depends this much on three nameplates is exposed if any of them slips.

The lesson for buyers is practical. The best-selling Tata EVs are not the ones with the biggest discounts, so do not read a large offer as a sign of a great deal. It often signals a car that needs help selling. Negotiate hard on the discounted models and expect little on the popular ones.

Why do some sources show a different Tata EV figure for September 2026?

Retail registrations and wholesale dispatches are different measures, and even Vahan tables differ by a small margin depending on the date they were pulled. This article uses retail only: 14,769 at brand level, with model splits that sum to about 0.8% more.
